Our lives are defined, and saved, by the quest for meaning. The ability to identify our particular purpose–our unique significance as individuals – determines not only the quality of our lives but, during difficult times, our very survival. Rather than encourage the personal quest for meaning, ours is a culture that emphasizes chasing power outside of ourselves through competition, material success, and the pursuit of happiness. But happiness cannot be pursued, as psychologists have pointed out; it must ensue from lives that are founded on a clear sense of meaning. What gives you strength, purpose, clarity and determination? How do you choose what really matters? What makes you feel most authentic and alive?
