How to Begin Again

How to Begin AgainHow to Begin Again
December, 2014

Summary

The power to begin again is a cornerstone of human aptitude, genius, and resilience. In this final 2014 session of The Seekers Forum, Mark¬†explored the phenomenon of viriditas, the green, self-renewing power that rests at the heart of awakened life. Spiritual traditions from the homespun Christian (“If at first you don’t succeed, Try, try, try again”), to ancient Vedanta (“Take it back to its starting place — the mind — again and again”), to Zen Buddhism (“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few.”) echo this emphasis on self-renewal as an aspect of enlightenment. “In meditation,” says Sharon Salzberg, “each time we forget and realize that we have forgotten — that is a moment of enlightenment.” When we know this, life becomes a series of open doors, a path of curiosity and verve, possibility, and wonder.
