Loving another human being over time is not as simple as it sounds. As inconstant, imperfect, contradictory beings, we are challenged by love’s complexities and the demands of our relationships. In fact, as Thomas Merton observed, “Prayer and love are learned in the hour when prayer becomes impossible and the heart has turned to stone.” In this month’s edition of The Seekers Forum, we explore the enigma of committed love and how to cope with its ups and downs. How do we practice faithful abiding when emotions would have us run for the hills? What’s the difference between attachment and commitment in love? Is it better to walk away than to suffer, or risk causing suffering to others? Finally, how can we know our potential as lovers, and give all that we can give, without losing ourselves in relationships? These are some of the challenges we examine in this first talk of Spring.
