Quote from Kelly Prentice on November 2023, 12:16 pmI have since last night been thinking about your question on beauty and how it affects well-being. Nobody has asked this of me before (and whoa, it is a great question). It makes me wonder, are some of us more drawn to beauty and awe? Does beauty bring more joy and love of life to our days? There is this pleasure we take in seeing a thing of beauty... even though it's defined differently for each of us. Whether it be visual arts with colors leaving a lasting impression, or performing arts with bodies moving in pleasing succession, the haunting beauty of a soprano voice, or crafting a living space of comfort and natural materials.
Each day, after the chaos of morning routines, my 10 year-old is the last to leave the house in a flurry--usually leaving a tornado of dirty socks, plates with food, glasses, pencils, and sweatshirts in his wake. Something in me cannot help it, day after day I straighten the place up, light a candle, set some flowers on the table. Sometimes it seems so ridiculous, taking 30 or 40 minutes to "set the stage" before I get to work. Yet, there is something to it; the way it changes the course of my day. I think this is the something in me that craves the possibility conveyed by clear, clean spaces, the momentary taking in of color, of geometric design, of movement within the space. I think it brings joy, it brings new energy and ideas... I also think perhaps beauty can be found in the most unlikely places..
