Writing Prompts:

1. Examine a traumatic memory from your past through the lens of the impartial witness. What looks different from this perspective? Be specific.

  • Is there resistance to looking at this memory impartially? If so, what is it?
  • Does the witness perspective shift the blame in this memory for you? Why or why not?
  • Does the witness perspective shift your pain in any way?

2. Which memories do you dwell on that cause you pain? How does ruminating on these past experiences make them worse?

  • Do these painful memories impact your sense of self-worth? If so, how?
  • Which aspects of these memories might be questionable or even untrue?
  • How might you unhook from these ruminations? Be specific.
