LIGHT FROM A THOUSAND STARS:
THE PROPER EMOTION IS WONDER

Summary

“The proper emotion is wonder,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. In this month’s program, we explored the evolutionary power of wonder, and why awe is necessary to human happiness. Without awe, there can be no adoration; without adoration, there can be no reverence. Without reverence, life loses its spiritual center, and we may find ourselves feeling empty and soulsick. Mark discusses how awe affects the brain, and why nature installed these higher emotions like an alarm clock to wake us up from our daily trance and not miss the miracle of creation. How does awe elevate the mind and turn it toward freedom? How can we transform daily life through the practice of wonder? What have researchers discovered about the relationship between awe and depression? These are some of the questions we explored in this final session of 2020.
